Provide an analysis of the film 'This is England' explaining how the production practise appeals to the target market

The main genre of the film, This is England is realism because it is budgeted by a independent film company. The budget would have been fairly small and would determine the range of cameras, actors and props. Shane meadows thought around this problem and tried to find cheaper methods of making a film and still relating to the genre realism. He made it cheaper by just cutting down on the things which were not really vital on having e.g. top of the range camera, using natural lighting and getting not very well known but cheap actors, but in some ways by having cheap material it made the film more realistic e.g. by using natural lighting it actually gives the audience the feel that they are actually there and by using unknown actors the audience may feel the characters are more realistic rather than if there was a well known actor in the film the audience would spot them from different films and get the feel that its only good acting.
As soon as the film starts there are many famous clips from the 80’s era so the audience immediately know what time the film is set in and what is going on in government and media at the time. This will also relate back to appealing to the target audience because it will appeal to those who were living at the time and people it were effecting at the time. The clips shown were clips which have previously been used so it cost Shane Meadows nothing to put the clips in the film which kept down the budget but still gave that realism effect.
I also noticed that most of the camera work throughout the film was handheld this would obviously be cheaper but also still give a realism effect of that the audience are actually there for example when a character is walking or running the camera is wobbling almost like you are actually running or walking with them. Shane meadows also used quad bikes to film along side fast movement instead of a glider although this is a lot cheaper it is not as smooth.
The film is mainly based on sub cultures and racism in the 80’s the main sub culture the film shows is the skin head culture which were around in the 80’s. The skin head culture was originated among working class youths in the United Kingdom, they often dressed in steel-toe boots, straight-leg jeans or Sta-Prest trousers, button-down shirts, and braces. They felt strongly on black nationalism and had strong beliefs in Britain being fully British. The sub cultures in the film will also open the range of audiences to the film because if a person was once part of that culture before then they will be interested in it. It also may appeal to a newer generation who wants to find out what sub cultures were like in the 1980’ compared to present time. Shane Meadows knew he couldn’t of paid out thousand of pounds to create the perfect set he wanted in his film so him and everyone who was involved in the film went searching for a place to film where it would create the most realism as possible for the time range of the 1980’s. The crew managed to find many untouched and un modernised parts of the country which where prime for filming in, the village they found was in Nottinghamshire which was a untouched village with 80’s housing and shops all around the area. This will also attract more audience who are from Nottinghamshire. Now that he had found the village he had to fill the village in old car which would have been around at the time and also inside the houses had to be appropriate. He managed to achieve this old 80’s look by using something modern EBay. There where many 80’s cheap merchandise he could buy on there which the budget allowed him to buy.
